Tai Chi Improves Flexibility, Strength
|
|

An ancient Chinese practice, Tai Chi has spread worldwide—for good reason. It's especially popular among seniors. Its gentle movements and breathing techniques are designed to restore balance, reduce stress, and relieve pain. The exercise expands the circulation in the body, which helps stimulate the repair of joints and lowers the level of arthritis pain.
According to the Oregon Research Institute, stretching and constant movements in Tai Chi improves physical range of motion, especially among seniors. Because the exercise requires little strain on the body and is easy to learn, people enjoy doing it. Tai Chi is often done outdoors with a group, which adds a fun, social component. For those with mobility or transportation challenges, a home care agency can provide assistance to and from sessions. Read more at tiny.cc/tai-chi.

Dear Katy By Kate Dougherty, Certified Senior Advisor

Dear Katy - Can the agency train me on care procedures for when the agency caregiver isn't there? M.T., Layton, UT
Dear M.T. - Yes, in fact they should be training you or informing you on any changes that are occurring in the client's care. A good agency should be communicating with the family in both written and verbal communication. An advantage of working with an agency that also provides home health care is that they can utilize their clinicians for training as the care plan is changing.
Dear Katy - We'll only have a caregiver during the day. Is there someone I can call if I have a question about my wife's care during the night? I.S., Vacaville, CA
Dear I.S. - Before you begin working with an agency, you should make sure that they have 24-hour on-call staff. These staff members should be able to answer questions about the care plan and schedule any emergency care that may be needed. If the questions are of a medical nature, one good option is to call a 24-hour advice nurse that is provided by some health care plans or medical groups.
